Making the switch to embrace your natural is truly beautiful, but non the less stressful AF-and picking the right products sadly isn’t any easier. Over the course of my journey I’ve tried countless brands and products, both good and bad. Through my trial and error I’ve come up with a list of items that helped me be successful and stress free. Using the right products for curly hair is extremely crucial, and using the wrong products yields in a lack of results. Ain’t nobody got time for that.
I’ve been on this curly hair journey for a year, and I’m truly living for it! My hair has never felt or looked better, and I’m beginning to love my hair again. Read more here if you’re still learning to love your natural. The list below consumes of my cultivated curly hair staples and are universal for most curl types and patterns. They’ve helped me achieve the greatest results in growing healthy curls, and I definitely recommend you trying these products/tools to start or add to your journey!
This no-poo cleanser is literally heaven on earth! Read more about why no-poo is better than shampoo in a later post! It’s my holy grail of curly hair products and I’ll prob have a nervous breakdown if it’s ever discontinued. Free of silicones, sulfates and parabens it’s full of everything good for healthy curls. Did I mention it smells AMAZING- Like I kind of want to eat it.
Heatlhy curls need mositure to fully thrive, and this conditioner delivers so much moisture your curls will scream where have you been all my life? It leaves my hair soft, manageable, and frizz-free. To get extra use out of it, in the shower I like to leave it on for 2-3 minutes before rinsing off. This really makes it a breeze to finger comb after, and preps your curls to be styled to perfection.
Not all style creams are created equal, and Devacurls Supercream is in a category all of it’s own. Most styling cream’s may leave your curls feeling heavy and weighed down, not this. It’s truly what’s given my curls definition again, and leaves my hair bouncy, and soft. I also use this to restyle my day 3 hair and it’s even better!
Devacurl Ultra Defining Gel $19.95
Crunchy taco’s, yes please. Crunchy curls, pass. You’ll never have to worry that 90’s horrible mess again. This in combination with the supercream, creates the softest curl. It enhances curls to perfection, and will most definitely make you smile. I love to smooth a quarter size amount over my curls after fingering combing my supercream throughout, and then scrunch upwards with a microfiber towel. Sometimes I’ll finger twist in small sections throughout, twisting in the direction of my curl.
Devacurl Set it Free Spray $19.95
When my curls need a little pick me up, I know I can count on my spray from Devacurl. It’s literally the secret ingredient in every curl cocktail. We all know what happens when you leave out the mint leaves in a mojitio, it just ain’t right. I never have to worry about frizz or dehydrated curls with this stocked in my cabinet.
This leave in conditioner is the only one I’ve ever tried, and probably ever will. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it right? It leaves my curls moisturized and tangle free, so I don’t see a need to change it. I finger comb it on from roots to ends on day 1 hair, and then add the rest of my styling products. It’s the makeup primer for your curls basically, it’s the perfect base to start with. I’ll deep condition on day 4 and then reapply this and restyle. It’s perfect.
Devacurl Microfiber Hair Towel ( Cotton T-Shirt) $20.00
If you’re not doing this you need to be. Using a regular towel to dry your hair is horrible. I’m serving you stank face if you do. Microfiber towels avoid frizz from happening and are less harsh on your precious locks. This type of towel will help your curls to dry without completely stripping them of moisture. For a DIY Microfiber Towel you can also use a plain old cotton t-shirt, however if you can splurge on this towel from Devacurl, it’s highly recommended.
Slip Silk Pillowcase $79.00
Companies like Slip know what they’re doing. Who doesn’t want to wake up prettier? Now if they could tweak it to wake up like Beyonce-hmmmmmm. Silk pillowcase’s leave your hair frizz free and your skin crease free, what’s not to love about that. They do wonders for your locks and skin, and I can’t imagine resting my curls on anything else.
Goody Ouchless Scrunchie $8.00
When I lay my curls down to sleep, (on my silk pillowcase of course) I put them up pineapple style with a scrunchie. The loose scrunchie prevents my curls from losing shape in the morning and being free of frizz. I like to use those loose-big colorful scrunchies for two reasons. A: becuase they’re fun af, and B: they aren’t too tight, or too loose, so they hold my hair up without causing too much stress. Thank you 90’s.
Diffuser- Prices Vary
Before my devacut, and before I started using the right products, my curls seemed to be out of reach. But after my cut, and after I started using the right products, I saw hope. Once I popped in that diffuser though, the glow up was real.
A diffuser helps with the definition of your curls while adding volume. Some people don’t feel the need for one, but it’s defiently a must for me. When you first start your journey your curls will not be as curly as you’d like, and this will help you achieve a much fuller look.
They key to finding a good diffuser is making sure you’re getting one with multiple temperature settings. Like this one from DevaCurl. Most days I diffuse on a cool setting, with a speed of 1, for 30 minutes letting the rest air dry. On days that I want more volume, I’ll use a warmer setting with a higher speed. I add warm heat on a speed setting of 2 to my roots for the last 10 minutes of diffusing, focusing the heat only at my roots , creating frizz free volume. Remember the days when you used to straighten and blow out your hair? (Gasp!). And how you used to focus heat at the roots to add lift and volume? It’s the exact same thing for your curls. Diffuse away!
Hope these products and tools, leave you armed and ready to conquer your curly hair journey. Now curly girls let’s get in formation.
